Benefits of Reinstating Recess in Schools
Research suggests that schools should reinstate recess because of the cognitive, physical,
and social benefits and development skills that recess can promote in childhood development
stages. For many years people have assumed that recess is of little value to a developing child
and just a way to extend time that is needed more to accomplish learning goals within the
classroom. The benefits of recess have been overlooked and not taken into reason on the bases of
helping a developing child in several areas. To demonstrate and explain the benefits of recess
being reinstated in school there are several areas that contribute. First, I will explain the
cognitive and academic benefits of recess on childhood development. Next, I will explore and
discuss the physical benefits behind recess being in school. Finally, I will discuss the important
role recess has on the childhood development stages.
Cognitive and Academic Benefits of Recess
Cognitive development in a child is an important milestone in a child’s development and
structuring during the childhood stages of development. According to the American Psychology
Association (2007), cognitive development is the psychological and neuroscience focus of
development and functioning in children. Cognitive development focuses on how information is
processed in the brain, functions of perceptual skills, and functions of brain development through
learning and skills. With that being said, how does recess benefit a child’s cognitive
development? Recess helps by developing cognitive understanding through interactive and social
environments.
According to the American Psychology Association (2007), the lack of understanding on
how cognitive processes were being developed through recess time helped with leading to the
