Scientific Research
Scientific research comprises of a systematic investigation of phenomena, scientific
theories, and developing hypotheses. A research is termed scientific if its method of inquiry is
based on measurable or empirical evidence. Thus, a scientific research is a systematic method of
collecting data and harness curiosity. In a scientific research, a hypothesis testing involving a
careful collection of data from a sample population using either qualitative or quantitative
technique. The objective of this paper is to provide the steps in carrying out the scientific
research to achieve the research objectives.
Scientific Research
In a scientific research, researchers use different tools to collect and analyze data. A
quantitative data technique is the major data collection tool used in a scientific research that
involves collecting and analyzing the numerical data using the statistical technique. Typically,
the quantitative technique relies on a structured and random sampling of data collection to
compare and summarize the research results. A scientific research can also use the qualitative
technique to collect and analyze data. Contrary to the quantitative technique that collects
numerical data, qualitative scientific research collects data from words, video, and images.
After a data collection, data analysis is the next step in a scientific research that involves
breaking down a piece of data to draw conclusions. Data analysis is the process of inspecting,
transforming and cleaning data with a goal of collecting useful information to support decision
making. Techniques to analyze data include descriptive statistics, time series, frequency
distribution and nominal comparison. (Agresti, 2002.) A replication is the next step in a
scientific research implying that an experiment should be able to produce the same results if the
same research is repeated.
