Science and Religion
Religion and faith seems like to totally opposite idea. Science seek empirical evidence
while religion is based solely on faith. In truth there are many parallels between the two different
word perspectives. Dr. Charles Townes wrote the article “The Convergence of Science and
Religion” in order to explore the similarities between religion and science. Science is the
systematic study of different phenomena in the universe while religion is the belief in a higher
being present in the universe. Science and religion are uniquely different but at the same time
they have many similarities.
Many people would not agree with Townes belief science and religion have many
similarities. Science and religion are different matters with different methods (Townes, 1966 p.
2). This means they are distinctly different with different goals and theoretical frameworks. One
focuses on what can be tested and observed while the other is focused on what cannot be
observed but is still believed. According to Townes, the two are not as different as many would
believe. He talks about the intervention of science and religion throughout history and their
commonalities.
For one, Townes (1966) believes faith is an essential aspect of religion but it is also an
essential aspect of science. It takes faith for scientists to develop hypothesis and enter into
experiment that could fail. They must have faith the experiment would work or they would not
conduct the experiment. Empirical evidence is developed after the faith in the experiment has
been established. Secondly, Townes believes there are similarities in the role of revelation. In
science revelation comes in the form of the findings of the research. In religion, revelation comes
in the form of religious discovery.
