Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a disorder appearing in childhood and
carrying through to adulthood. The ADHD diagnosis is the most common in children of a school
age and is paired with symptoms, such as an inability to pay attention or focus as well has
hyperactivity. The following paper will discuss the case of Matt and provide an explanation of
the biological, psychological, and social factors involved with the disorder as well as recommend
the best intervention approach in clinical psychology. ADHD can create a disruption into the life
of the child by causing interruptions in proper functioning and social challenges but with proper
treatment the disorder can be properly controlled.
Overview of Selected Case
Matt is a first grader who has been displaying inattention and poor concentration. He is
displaying an inability to sit still and focus on his classwork. Matt also displays symptoms of
hyperactivity. Despite his problems at school, his hyper behavior is considered normal at home
where his parents provide very little structure. Matt and his four siblings are given freedom by
their parents and are rarely disciplined for their behavior. He is used to having the freedom to
complete tasks at his own pace which has made it difficult for him to adapt to the more
structured classroom environment.
At the end of first grade, Matt received his report card which showed he passed his
subjects but in the areas of paying attention, completing work on time, general work habits, and
the ability to work independently were rated unsatisfactory. Matt’s teacher suggested his parents
have a physical exam done to determine if the cause of his behavior was due to a physical
ailment. A pediatrician suggested Matt be seen by a clinical psychologist. An evaluation of Matt
