Increasing evidence is indicating the effectiveness of employing and utilizing people
as a means of attaining a competitive advantage. Nonetheless, many contemporary
organizations still employ conventional styles to strategy. However, there is criticisms against
such approaches including the fact that they ignore human factors. For this reason, such
approaches may be principally insufficient to attain a people-based competitive advantage to
the organization. Consequently, a substitute approach based on existential/humanistic
movement in psychology is being employed in organizations. By focusing on processes,
effectiveness, and leadership this strategy can be employed to attain a people-based
competitive advantage (David, 2007). The strategy is based on the fact that people are the
most valuable asset for an organization.
According to McGregor Theory X and Y, there are two types of people. Theory X
suggests that an average person dislikes the responsibility and works as little as possible.
Thus, management is responsible for motivating such employees. Without management
intervention, such employees will be passive and resistant to the organizational goals. On the
other hand, theory Y people are not resistant or passive to the organizational goals. They are
intrinsically motivated. The role of management is to ensure that people develop these human
features for themselves (Brief & Weiss, 2012).
Existential approaches can be employed by managers to realize performance
excellence. According to Drucker (2002), setting job standards and expectations for the
employees is a key aspect of realizing the organizational goals. For this reason, managers are
employing existential strategies to attain organizational goals. Thus, existential approaches to
attaining a people-based competitive advantage are realistic for management.
Utilizing employees as the organization’s fundamental competitive advantage,
requires a crucial role for people management. Thus, organizations should treat all employees
