He was born on 11th January 1842 and died on 26th August 1910 inEurope. He had 4 siblings and he settled in Cambridge, the USA with his wife and 5 children. Hefounded the school of pragmatism and functionalism (Marsella, T). Pragmatism explains that theexplanation and meaning of an idea are to be sought practically. The thought is thereforesupposed to guide action and that truth is meant to be tested by consequences of belief. Hediscussed the concept of free-will that is paramount to happiness. He believed that religiousexperience should be the primary focus and not the various religious institutions that existed. He,therefore, contributed to the Science of Religion, (Hiltner, S). He also studied the theory ofemotion and concluded that emotions are psychological reactions that people experience duringan event that causes physiological reactions, for example, flight reaction when one is faced withdanger.2.
