In order to carry on with our everyday activities smoothly, we must interact with other
people to share ideas. However, interaction can become hard especially when the two parties
lack social work skills. Hence, to achieve an effective interaction with other people, one requires
micro skills. These are skills necessary for one to work with other people in harmony (Kirst-
Ashman & Hull, 2012).
Many are the times we share stories with the victims of an ordeal we have experienced in
our past. A research conducted by Kirst-Ashman and Hull reveals that most people would
hesitate to reveal their story to the victim (2012). According to the micro skills perspective, I
would comfortably share my story with a victim of child abuse if I experienced the same ordeal
in my past life (Knight, 2012). The disclosure of my story will be meant to restore the lost
victim’s hope. Indeed, the victim will acknowledge that the predicaments are meant to be
experienced by human beings and do not last forever. Subsequently, the victim will feel relieved
and start off a new life.
It is most appropriate to tell a client about your history after he/she has presented a story
similar to the one you encountered in your past. The best practice is to wait for the client to share
the story before you tell yours. This will allow you to gather some points for encouragement in
regard to the nature of his/her story (Turner, 2010).
Depending on the nature of client’s story, one micro skill may be more appropriate than
the other. Micro skills that are pertinent to the story at hand are the most appropriate. They
should aim to resolve the victim’s problems. However, there are various challenges associated
with the use of micro skills. First, when interviewing a client, you must be very sensitive and
