A variable can be defined as any characteristic, quantity or a number that can be counted or
measured. A variable can be as well be defined as the data index. Sexes, age, expenses, capital
expenditure among others are good examples of variables. It is defined as a variable because can change
in between the data units in a population and may as well vary in terms of value over a period of time.
Variables can be numeric or categorical variables. Numeric variables have the values that tend to give a
description of measurable quantity as a number. Numeric variables can either be continuous or discrete.
The categorical variables have got the values which tend to describe characteristic or quality of a data
unit. Categorical variables can be nominal or ordinal variables (Ishii-Kuntz, 2013).
The SPSS data editor is used to enter data into SPSS which looks as Excel spreadsheet. First you
give the SPSS the name of the variables, double click on the column heading which permits one to enter
the information about the variable for that column. The dialog box that appears allows one to enter the
information about the variable and then click continue and return to the define variable dialog and click
ok, then press tab key to move to the next variable on the right up to the last column and use arrow key to
move to the first column of the next observation. Then you save the file by clicking File then Save.
To define the meaning of numbers of numeric data in SPSS, one requires the value label option.
This done to help the SPSS program to provide the actual labels which the number stands for.
The data set for level of income, sex, and marital status may be used for the final analysis in the
assignment. The level of income can be taken as the dependent variable while, sex, marital status and sex
can be taken as the dependent variables in the simple linear regression model (Tutz, 2011).
