A learning event is simply a planned and managed learning experience that is designed to
aid the student in acquiring necessary knowledge or skills. The learning event should have a
clear purpose and the educator must have the necessary experience and skills to ensure the
lessons success and understand the objectives of the lesson. In this learning event third grade
students will be taught through a lesson in social studies about the history and the significance of
the American Flag and its relevance in American society.
Learning Needs, Objectives, and Environment
The lesson will provide the class of twenty two third grade students with knowledge on the
importance of the flag in their community and in American history. The third graders will learn
to recognize the distinct characteristics of the American flag and develop an understanding of the
laws. Students will be instructed on how to properly fold the flag and will gain an understanding
of its patriotic significance. This lesson is necessary for the third grader to respect the flag and
begin to understand the freedoms afforded by this country that the flag represents.
For education in school to be effective, the environment needs to be conducive to learning,
allowing the pupils space and time to interact within the learning and teaching process (Brown,
2001). The objectives or learning outcomes for this learning event are first the student should be
able to tell what the colors, stripes, and stars of the American flag mean as well as gain
knowledge about the laws and regulations concerning the American flag. Lastly the student will
learn the proper steps for folding the American Flag.
The learning environment will meet the developmental needs of the third grader and allow
students to feel comfortable in engaging in an active learning process the third grader will gain
