The lesson plan that is being developed will involve a classroom of thirty ninth grade students
that will include a diverse population of students. Each student will have a different academic
learning ability but will engage in brain based research in order to develop a better understanding
of the social studies topic being learned. The specific social studies that will be taught in this
lesson involve students gaining a better understanding of the role the criminal justice system
plays in society.
Audience and Content
Learning and understanding the criminal justice system is essential for the student. Through
gaining and understanding of the criminal justice process students will gain a better
understanding of their legal rights and what freedoms they are afforded. The criminal justice
system is an important function in American society and acts as the moral compass. Because
crime is a problem that has developed in every civilization and every society a system needed to
be created that would limit the actions of the criminal offender while assuring for justice with the
ultimate goal of improving public safety.
The goal of social studies it to provide students with information concerning their civic role
and responsibility while enabling them to gain understanding about the different social processes
in society. Brain-based research finds that the learner who engages in real world experiences will
attain and assimilate to the information more effectively because the activities are meaningful in
their day-to-day life experiences (Yates, 2008). Students will gain a better understanding of the
need for the criminal justice system and what role it plays in a society. The purpose of the lesson
is to get students to start thinking and asking basic questions about the criminal justice system
