Autism Spectrum Disorder
Introduction
Autistic disorder is characterised by impairment in social interaction, communication
and restricted and repetitive behavior patterns. It is a single disorder that includes disorders
that were previously considered separate that is: autism, Asperger's syndrome, childhood
disintegrative disorder and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified.Signs of
autism often develop gradually, though some children reach their developmental milestones
at a normal pace and then regress. A child must have apperent symptoms before age 3 to be
termed autistic.
The prevalence rate of Autism spectrum disorder is now approximated to be 58.7 per
10,000 children. The incidence of the diagnosis of autism has increased. The increase in the
number of children identified with autism is likely related to changes in the definition of and
diagnostic criteria for autism, as well as improvements in the recognition of autism at
younger ages. An increase in the availability of diagnostic services, treatment facilities, and
professionals trained in childhood development disorders has greatly increased the capacity
of the health care system to identify and treat children with autistic spectrum disorders at
younger ages.
Neurophysiological Underpinnings of Diseases and Disorder
The exact cause of autism is unknown, but is believed to be multifactorial, with a
strong genetic influence. Vaccine have role in causation of the disorder. There is no clear
unifying mechanism at either the molecular, cellular, or systems level to explain how it
