Major Counseling Theories
Reality theory was established by Dr. William Glasser, he claimed that persons who are
behaving in inappropriate ways do not require aid to find protection for their behavior (Capuzzi
and Gross). As a substitute, they entail aid in order to recognize their behavior as being unfitting
and then to learn how to behave in a more rational and creative way. Reality therapy endeavors
to assist persons standardize the domain around them more competently so that they are well
capable to gratify their necessities (Savickas). Reality Therapy method to psychotherapy and
problem resolving concentrates on the here and now of the client and also how to form a superior
future, rather than focusing at length on the past (Chan, Berven, and Thomas). It emphasizes on
creating resolutions, and taking action and control of one's personal life. Naturally, clients strive
to realize what they actually want and whether what they are presently doing is really getting
them closer to, or much away from, that objective.
There are a number of key concepts in this theory, one of them is the choice theory which
advocates that every time we have some ability to make choices and exercise rheostat in our lives
(Chan, Berven, and Thomas). It teaches that we are always inspired by what we need at that
time. It accentuates the importance of building and upholding positive relationships with others
to generate a collective vision. Secondly the operator of Reality Analysis, the WDEP system,
applies the values to persons, to groups, and to societies. Significant to the actual use of the
method is the founding of a fair, stable, ad welcoming atmosphere, relationship, environment, or
climate (Capuzzi and Gross).
