Why pH is Important
At the correct pH, an influenza virus particle can be rendered inactive by a correctly-
shaped antibody that is produced by the human immune system.
When human blood pH is too far removed from the optimal value of 7.4, the blood protein
known as hemoglobin cannot transport oxygen and carbon as efficiently.
A pH at an unsafe low level can result in more hydrogen ions sticking to negative regions of
proteins.
Each protein can function most effectively at its optimal pH because that is when it has the
correct shape.
At a pH of 7.4, human blood has the optimal number of free hydrogen ions to allow for the
maximum efficiency of blood proteins.
