My Auto-ethnography on being in the Basketball Team
Playing basketball had been my passion since childhood. The competitions that I watched
sparked my interest in the game and I was always determined to be a great basketball player one
day. I loved the way the players fared on in the pitch and each time I was watching a
competition, I could pick on one side and support it happily. I always celebrated when the side I
was supporting wins any competition. My mother realized this passion and motivated me to go
for it. Whenever there were competitions nearby, she always accompanied me and I enjoyed it.
The passion kept growing and I started training when I was 8. I used to envy the elder players
who had mastered the game well and could play with ease. My competence in the game kept
improving and most of my colleagues were happy with me. When I reached college, I joined the
school’s basketball team.
There were various sports in college and everyone was free to choose the one they liked.
Being part of the basketball team was a mystery to many. The students developed a perception
that all basketball players must be tall. Indeed, most basketball players were taller and
seemingly, I was the shortest. One day as we were having a nature walk with a friend, he
inquired why I played basketball yet I was not tall enough. I found the question difficult and ask
him to join me if he wishes. He was not willing to be part of the basketball team and I realized

that most students perceive basketball to be a game for the chosen few. The training sessions and
competitions motivate members to be in the basketball team.
Entry into basketball is no magic. Consistent training is required to be part of the team.
The coach always insists on punctuality to training sessions. Some friends who were interested in
basketball were kicked out by the coach after they failed to appear for training sessions. I knew
how strict the coach was and I always arrived there earlier. We train and later form teams within
ourselves to compete. I enjoyed the competition part since it gave everyone a chance to shine.
The need to showcase skills in basketball is what motivates the members to join the game.
Being part of the basketball team has greatly influenced my taste and preferences in
various aspects of life. I realized that most basketball players are fans of hip-hop music. I had
been a fan of jazz but on joining the team, I shifted to hip-hop music. We used to play hip-hop
songs during our training and this seemed to be a culture that defined us in school. Being a
member of the basketball group also changed my sense of fashion. I realized that most players
mainly loved t-shirts and jewellery and I also adapted the trend. Bangles and necklaces became a
unique identity for basketball players and most people could assume that a student with the two
was a basketball player.
The basketball team has rituals that I found interesting since I joined. One of the exciting
rituals is listening to music while exercising. I found this enjoyable when I started training with
the team. Music is a source of motivation and relaxation during exercise. Another ritual is on the
jerseys. The jerseys meant for basketball players are always unique and one can easily identify
them. In school, one does not need to introduce themselves as a basketball player once they have
worn the jerseys. Another special ritual in basketball is the handshake with other players. We
