Week Four
After reviewing this week’s Electronic Reserve Readings, identify three curiosity techniques
(as addressed on p. 116 of your text) that American colonists may have applied when thinking
about their situation prior to the Boston Tea Party.
The three curiosity techniques the colonists most likely used are to look for the imperfections in things,
note your own and others' dissatisfactions, and recognize the opportunity in things. Looking for the
imperfections in things is probably the first bit of curiosity that colonists had during their situation prior to
the Boston Tea Party. As the situation gradually became worse due to taxation laws, the colonists began
to think about things that could be improved to better the situation. Whether it was expressed by
dissatisfaction or not, curiosity had started creating a number of different ideas. That almost effortlessly
turned into another curiosity technique that caused them to note their own and others' dissatisfactions.
One colonist in particular was Samuel Adams. He began to see that others shared his discontent. Along
with other colonists, Samuel Adams was able to recognize the opportunity in the controversy about taxes.
Instead of giving in to feelings, he saw an opportunity to "fix" the problem and took it.
Without sharing personal information, what strategies can you use to produce ideas that will
help you solve a problem or issue you are currently facing?
Based on the information provided by chapter nine, there are many different strategies to help
produce ideas. They include stimulating the imagination, aiming for originality, withholding judgement,
and overcoming obstacles such as thinker's block and vagueness. A problem I am currently facing is
constantly having to adapt and find new ways to do things. I think the strategy I use the most is
stimulating my imagination. Every time I am challenged with something new, my mind immediately
begins generating ideas to solve the problem. They can range from making different devices to
aid me to paying an assistant to follow me around. Another strategy I try to use is aiming for
originality. I know that realistically I can't buy every piece of adaptive equipment and even if I could, all
of it wouldn't work for me. I consider my ideas original because even though many people have
similar problems, the ideas to solve them were based on my particular situation. In my opinion, that's
how some of the best inventions are made.
Thomas Edison is a great example of the innovations and contributions that a creative person
can make to society and the world. One could argue that without his invention of the light
bulb, none of us would know life and the modern world as we do today. Name one other
important historical figure who used creativity to solve a problem, or improve our lives. What
can you learn from this person’s life to stimulate your own creativity?
Possibly one of the greatest historical figures of all time would have to be Isaac Newton. As a physicist,
mathematician, astronomer, alchemist, philosopher, and theologian, he noticed that there were things that
occured in nature that couldn't be explained and set out to find the answers. Using his remarkable critical
thinking skills, he essentially created physics to explain why objects act a certain way and how everything
influences those objects. He described the three laws of motion, discovered gravity, and almost single
handedly kept the scientific revolution advancing. Without the works of Isaac Newton, it's possible that our
world could be radically different. People like Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking may have never
become famous without the influence of Newton. This is the best example I can think of to thinking
outside the box. It was a time in which, compared to today's advancements, science was very young and
still being explained. It shows me that it is possible to think beyond the norm or what's accepted.

Think back to your childhood and the environment in which you were raised. How did those
early childhood experiences influence the level of curiosity you have today? Considering that
curiosity is an important element of creativity, identify techniques that can help you improve or
regain your curiosity.
My childhood could be called nothing less than sheltered. My parents did their best to try to detour
me from dangerous paths but also kept me informed of the consequences of traveling down such
roads. I was not the type of child who "experimented" with everything offered to me so I was kind of
naive and pure to the real world. Turning eighteen was a monumental moment in my life where I took
the word "freedom" to a whole new level. The lack of exposure to reality and the real world posed
extreme curiosity of boundaries. I wanted to experience all sorts of things that I was taught to avoid
and can honestly say that I experienced some "wild times." I do believe that because I was
sheltered, this only encouraged my feelings of having to experience something first hand, it was not
enough to hear it by word of mouth, I had to do it to be satisfied and form my own opinion. Once I
obtained the first taste of making my own decisions, I have never looked back. In life, I find it normal
to have walked in all departments of reality in order to form an opinion based on my own beliefs. I
keep an open mind from all aspects, and try not to judge a book by its cover knowing that I may be
selling myself short of what is inside. If I have not experienced something in life, that burning desire
to try it still remains deep within my being.
Identify key strategies that help stimulate your imagination. Explain how you would use those
strategies to be creative.
Reality is a key strategy that helps to stimulate the imagination. Based on what a person knows, he or
she can expand and enhance ideas that are made up of endless possibilities. As humans we learn and
teach each other, expand on ideas, create new ones, and the cycle repeats. Being well diversed in all
areas of life and knowledge can help create an environment full of creativity and thirst for knowledge.
Using ones imagination subjects a persons ideas to exist currently and possibly promote was could exist
in the future. In most cases, a product is a form of the imagination and with great force and effort, turned
into a reality. One must possess a certain level of reality in order to entertain their imagination of
improving ideas. One must also be accepting of change and enhancement being that the imagination is
part of the evolution process.
