participating in the discussions about online and traditional education and pondering on your
views and experiences, explain the importance of making distinctions when evaluating claims
such as “Online schools are nothing more than diploma mills”.
The main points to remember is that not all online classes and schools are considered paying for a
diploma. There are many online colleges that offer degrees that are respectable and can be applied to
numerous jobs. There are even traditional colleges that are beginning to offer online classes to students.
The so called ''diploma mills'' are nothing more than a way to make money. Only schools that are
accredited are considered beneficial and doing the research to find such schools should be the first step.
Being able to distinguish facts from opinions is also important. By not buying in to the stereotypes from
friends or other people, clear decisions can be made to determine whether online classes are more
advantageous than traditional colleges. Some people may say that there is little to no time with the
instructor, while others say the instructor is easily reached by emails or instant messaging. Ultimately, it is
just hearsay and a point to remember is every school is different.

What are some of the most important distinctions you should make and avoid overlooking
when making critical evaluation? Compare how you could apply those distinctions when
reading, listening, or viewing critically.
The first distinction that should be made is between the person and the idea. Basically, this means
that an idea should not be rejected or accepted based on who expressed it. On page 69, the book
uses the examples of Adolf Hitler and Winston Churchill suggesting that people would be less
interested in what Hitler said based on his reputation. The distinction between fact
and interpretation is very important when making critical evaluation. A fact is something that can be
proven and is certain while an interpretation is just an explanation of meaning or significance. Another
distinction is between an idea's validity and the quality of its expression meaning bad ideas can be
perceived as good because of the way it was presented. Just these few distinctions can mean the
difference between being influenced and making a critical evaluation. One way to apply each to
