Background
Considering that change is inevitable, it is essential to prepare and be ready to
embrace changes. However, before adopting changes, it is critical to ensure that changes will
have the desired outcome. In this case, there is a need to make an informed decision relating
to changes in the math curriculum for 5
th
graders. Informed decisions are essential in
achieving outcomes that will have a lasting impression. For this reason, analysis of the
available data will be carried out to make an informed decision as to whether the math
curriculum of 5
th
graders should be changed. In this case, a fifth-grader is a student who is in
their last year of elementary school. Students at this level of their education are usually aged
between ten to eleven years if they were not held back because of personal issues.
The need to review the math curriculum for 5
th
graders is because of the recent
covid19 pandemic that has created a need for changes in the learning process. Specifically,
there has been a shift towards online learning to prevent the coronavirus from spreading
(Mogaji 2020). Online learning is a form of distance learning whereby students are taught
over the internet (Skinner 2019). Therefore, unlike the traditional learning system in which
students were required to attend classes and interact with teachers who would have the
chance to evaluate firsthand the progress that students are making, online learning makes it
difficult for educators to assess students' progress. For this reason, there is a need to ascertain
whether students' performances before the pandemic are statistically significantly different
from their performances during the pandemic. The findings will inform the need for changes
in the math curriculum to ensure that the learning process that educators are using during the
current covid19 pandemic have the desired impact on students' performances.
