Passing by Larson Nella
As a detective investing the death of Clare, I would first analyze the crime scene before
accusing anyone. From the information provided in the novel, my first suspect would be Irene. It
is important to note that the relationship between Clare Kendry and Iren was a fascination since
the two had a lifestyle that intrigues one other. Therefore, two could be considered that they were
inseparable since their childhood. However, their relationship changed when Irene concluded
that Clare and her spouse Brian were having an affair. Due to the suspicions, Irene's feelings
toward Clare became aggressive. She became more committed than ever to prevent Clare from
unifying her social circle and maybe taking her place in the black civilization.
It is essential to highlight that from the above information, one can conclude that Irene
had motives to kill Clare. For instance, she would feel betrayed by her childhood friend having
an affair with her husband. Also, she was not ready to be replaced in black society. It is also
convincing that Irene was on standby when Clare strangely falls to her death through an open
window. Furthermore, it would be hard to believe that Clare had committed suicide since she
was determined to join the black society from the incident. However, the other people at the
party could be suspects, but that can only be determined after a detailed analysis of the crime
scene. Finally, it is worth noting that by killing Clare, Irene had solved some of her worries, such
as being replaced in the black society and her relationship with her husband. In addition, Irene,

who prides herself on her sincerity, had the most puzzling understanding of how Clare died after
the story.
If Irene had an airtight alibi, my secondary suspect in the murder case would be Clare's
husband, John. John did not know that Clare and Irene were black since he spoke negatively
about black people. When Irene and her friend Felise run into John in the streets, John realizes
that they are black. It can be concluded that John became suspicious of Clare's ancestry origin
after encountering Irene and Felise on the street. If that was the case, it was enough for John to
look for Clare and confront her, thus storming at the party. John burst into the room demanding
to know whether Clare is and yells racial slur, causing tension. Later, Clare strangely falls to her
death through an open window. It is essential to highlight that there is a possibility that John
might have accidentally pushed her, or Clare fell, running away from him. It is evident that the
blacks felt imprisoned by John and were willing to return to the black society. Therefore, John
should be considered a suspect due to his action at the party and consider his hatred for black
people to be the motive. It could also be possible that John became suspicious of Clare and came
to confront Clare, which made her panic and accidentally fall through that window.
The important Aspect of Passing as far as its role in the American group is its demeanor
of diversity in the American experience, especially as far as sex or sexuality and race as Irene
and Clare's accounts create, the minutes where issues of race and sex meet are essential to
understanding Larsen's portrayal of how one's appearance of their personality shapes their
experience. Clare fills in as the uncanny doppelganger to Irene in the Freudian psychoanalytic
sense from multiple points of view. The novel profoundly worried about the truth of
vulnerability, explicitly as far as personality. With the agreement that personality shapes insight,
Nella Larsen accounts for characters constrained by society to pick their experience. By
