In the last few years, the use of blogs, wikis, and other types of sharing Web sites (such as
YouTube, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and so on) has become increasingly popular as a
means of expressing oneself and spreading news, opinions, or ideas. What kinds of habits
that hinder thinking must we guard against when using with these types of online media?
Probably one thing every one should guard against while using online media is to not believe everything
you see. There have been plenty of times, and even more people, that something is said or written and
gets accepted as truth without any research or follow up. A good example of this are the wikis like
Wikipedia. Just because it claims to be an online encyclopedia, people automatically assume that it's
credible, however, that's not always the case. Wikipedia can be updated by anyone so chances are some
of the articles are incorrect. Another example is gossip. People should know better and guard against
gossip by not believing it as soon as it's seen. All of the social medias are hotspots for gossip. One
person posts something, other people see it and assume it's true, they spread the post, and pretty soon a
rumor has started that could cause damage physically and emotionally. That could also be another habit
to guard against. Don't make claims or statements that are false or can't be proven. It only
causes problems in the end.

Your text book states, “Individuality is not inborn but acquired” (Ruggiero, 2009, p. 52). What
are some of the steps you can take to become an individual? What are some habits that may
hinder your ability to become an individual and to think critically? How can you overcome
those habits?
The text says the key to becoming individuals is to look at ourselves honestly and objectively. This is
a difficult step to take because it requires the person to stop wishful thinking and get rid of illusions
about themselves. It's harsh and difficult but that's why it's a key step to becoming individuals; few
people are doing it. Acknowledging the different influences is another step towards individuality.
Sorting out and evaluating your own ideas is the next step and after all of that, the final step is to
choose the best ones that get endorsements and which should be strived to acquire. Depending on
the individual and situation some of the most important habits are the mine is better habit, face
saving, resistance to change habit, conformity, stereotyping, and self-deception habit. One way to
overcome these habits is to try to determine what makes the person automatically make a decision
without considering other sides to a topic. Another process is to get in the habit of thinking about the
thinking also called metacognition. When immediate feelings occur about a topic, try to control them
to allow objective thinking.

Based on your readings from p. 53 of your textbook and your personal experience, would you
say that pop-culture affects individuality and, if so, how?
Based on the readings from the text, I agree that pop culture affects individuality to an extent. We
were, and still are, being influenced by others from the day we were born teaching us what is
acceptable, how to act, how to talk, etc. by people that had been influenced by the culture of their
time. Essentially, we have been affected by pop culture literally everyday of our lives in some or
another. I also agree that pop culture tends to cause acculturation. The proof is all around us by
looking at others. Instead of seeing individuals, there are mainly the conformists that have given in to
