Police Surveys on Community Input
Surveys are a method to obtain data on anything. Research surveys on the relationship
between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve are a way to establish how
well policing agencies are involved with the society and how safe community residents feel.
Police surveys also collect data about the priorities and concerns of local residents and
community organizations, along with other criminogenic or preventative factors in the local
environment. The CP-SAT, CVS, and the NCS can act as the best measures to identify how
successful policing has been within my community.
I come from a tightly-knit community in a small town where almost everyone knows the
other. It is a diverse community that has had issues with discrimination in the past but that has
recently overcome them. However, issues of crime are not entirely uncommon, even through
there is crime profiling even amongst ourselves. The National Crime Survey (NCS) on crime and
victimization will come in handy in providing the police department with crime statistics in the
area as well as information regarding criminal victimization (Cantor & Lynch, 2000). By
providing it to a sample of different members of the society, both victims and non-victims of
crime and victimization will share their experiences.
Next, the Community Policing Self-Assessment Tool (CP-SAT) web-based survey will
allow the department to collect data regarding the success of its collaborative partnerships with
the community (COPS, 2022). With a majority of community members having access to
smartphones and personal computers, the department will measure the extent to which
community members feel that its initiatives work. Finally, the Crime Victimization Survey
(CVS), a generic phone survey questionnaire, seeks to provide a measure of the prevalence of
