Many people are on the waiting list and there are few donors meaning there is quite a number that die while on the waiting list for not having found donors. In the US, in 2008, 83,000 people waited on the official waiting list while only 16,500 received transplants. 5000 people died from kidney complications while on the list (Jox et.al., 2015). According to the graph. The number of the waiting list went higher to 105,567 in 2009 with only 28,463 transplants being done. Some of the transplants are achieved through the black market. If the US deregulated the kidney market, people would, of course, be able to access buying and selling of kidneys freely which would improve health. However, the prices of Kidneys would rise drastically. 3 THE CURRENT STATE OF THE KIDNEY MARKET If the market was deregulated, the prices of kidneys would increase while there will be an even higher supply of transferable kidneys in the market. At price zero, the number of kidneys supplied would be Q1 while the number required would be Q3 hence still a deficit. Therefore, the equilibrium price would be E2.
