Running Head: COMPLEX SYSTEMS 1 Complex Systems Institutional Affiliation Course Name Instructor Date COMPLEX SYSTEMS 2 COMPLEX SYSTEMS SMART METERS IN NETHERLANDS Abstract The aim of this paper is not to argue in favour or against smart electricity meters but to present an overview of the functionality and infrastructure of the smart metering in the Netherlands. The discussion will involve functionality changes in response to security and privacy concerns, rationale and trending developments. Introduction In March 2014, Dutch economics minister Henk Kamp stated that 15 million smart gas-electric meters will be installed in almost every plot by the year 2020. The spark debate among politicians, scholars, grid operators, privacy advocates, and consumer interest groups among other groups started in 2008. However, the Dutch state decided to proceed with the project and reported about 3 million households approximately 80% of the countries households to be installed with smart meters in 2014. Although the government provided shallow information over scattered documents, the paper uses a variety of sources to build up the rationale, explain the design choices, an overview of the communication trend and trend, highlights on smart metering from an economic and technical, security and privacy and main conclusions from the project.
