A successful negotiation is one which leaves all parties involved contented with the conclusion made after the excesses (Ting-Toomey, et al., 2018). One of these nonverbal characteristics is facial expressions. A clear understanding of facial expression helps in interpreting important gestures which hold important messages in a conversation. It also prevents one from missing the entire meaning of the conversation. Another nonverbal characteristic to be mindful of is the use of silence. Some cultures find silent pauses being very uncomfortable. Yet in other cultures, silence is expected. (Volkema, 2012) asserts that, the silence is used to process the information and they may become irritated if that thought process is interrupted. On the other hand, when one understands well how to use silent, he or she will be able to prevent conflicts which may arise from negotiating parties falling to give their opponents room to express their feelings. The third type of cultural nonverbal characteristic is the use of touching. Other than the initial handshake, additional touching eludes to intimacy that may make some cultures feel uncomfortable.
