After the First World War, the American society started to transform in various directions. Lee’s classic novel, which was set during the Great Depression Era, offers a great example of understanding the culture in the Southern parts during 1930s, where racism and other forms of discrimination flourished. While Lee’s novel could be regarded as a coming of age account of a young girl, it exhibits racial discrimination, inequality in treatment, as well as flawed and lack of formal education. Racial discrimination is a predominant theme in this novel, especially as Atticus puts more emphasis on the issues of justice.
