It is the demographic information, laboratory results, medical histories, insurance data, and any other information that is gathered from patients to determine the necessary care (Hicks, 2017). The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) covers entities such as insurers and business acquaintances and healthcare professionals. These entities are restricted in the PHI categories they can gather, disseminate to organizations, or use for marketing reasons. Organizations are required to provide PHI to patients upon request, mainly through electronic formats. Confidentiality in healthcare is the responsibility of professionals with the right to use patient information or even communication to deny access by third parties.
