Surname 1 Name Course Instructor Date US immigration policy The U.S. policy on immigration is a current issue that Trump’s administration has been focusing on changing to enhance economic nationalism. The “First Program” by the president aims at protecting the industries and workers of the U.S. The new policy seeks to depart from the long-existing policy of the country on immigration that focused on the family asylum and reunification. The core areas that the current administration seeks to accomplish is the erection of a border wall along the Mexican border and restricting the issuance of work and travel visas from nationals of eight high-risk countries (Saldana 787). Besides, the policy will include enhanced screening of the refugees while increasing the staffs needed to undertake the task and curb all the legal immigration. The government is also proposing deportation of the immigrants who entered the country as children, which would mean an amendment of the policy that protects such individuals under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Immigration policy is a critical area for debating in the U.S. because it raises the question of the country’s economic welfare through the perceived need for the government to protect the welfare of its people and the local industries.
