Name Date School Affiliation Early life Jubal Anderson Early, a lawyer, politician and later a military officer was born on November 3, 1816. He was the son of Joab Early, a well-known politician and plantation owner and Ruth Hairston Early. In 1833, he joined the United States military academy at Westpoint and graduated three years later before resigning from the force in 1838 to study law (Early, 2015). Early was admitted to the bar a year later and proceeded to kickstart a political career in 1841 by winning a seat as a Whig to the House of Delegates. In 1847, Early was pulled back into military service by the Mexican war and was commissioned in the 1st Virginia regiment as a Major. He was back in politics 3 years later and became a strong defender of the union even voting against secession. The Civil War At the beginning of the civil war in 1861, Early was appointed Colonel by the governor and became Commander of the 24th Regiment Virginia Infantry. In one of his first major battles, Early led his regiment to victory at the First Battle of Manassas.
