Migration is considered to be one of the most contentious topics in Europe. Most often, migratory flows occur for various reasons and include a wide range of individuals dealing with various societal ills in their home countries (Angelescu & Trauner, 2018). Necessarily, some of these issues include the threat of terrorism, social unrest, and criminality, among others. In this regard, individuals seeking migration into Europe can either be labor migrants, asylum seekers and sometimes 'irregular' migrants. Images of people attempting to cross the borders by sea have become a common phenomenon. The current situation at the EU borders is arguably a result of the policies made to facilitate immigration, which some argue, has become an issue of competition among member states (Baldaccini, 2010).
