Running head: THE FALL OF THE SOVIET UNION The Fall of the Soviet Union Name of Student Institutional Affiliation 2 THE FALL OF THE SOVIET UNION The Fall of the Soviet Union The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was formed in 1922 through the signing of a treaty between Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. A Marxist revolutionary by the name Vladimir Lenin led the newly formed Communist Party that formed the government. USSR grew with time to comprise fifteen Socialist Republics. This essay will discuss the fall of the Soviet Union during the cold war (Nielsen, 2015). After a long reign of brutal leaders, Mikhail Gorbachev, a long time Communist Party politician took over the leadership in 1985. During this time, USSR had experienced a period of the stagnant economy with a weak political system. In his attempt to revive USSR, Gorbachev came up with glasnost and perestroika policies (Cummings, 2014). Glasnost policy, which advocated for political openness, helped to eliminate any remains of Stalinist repression like the secret police and banning of books.
