In his text “Beautiful Monsters,” Eric Puchner highlights this fact by telling the story of a world where grown-ups are driven out of society by children who end up being in control. This clash of the children and the adults in a dystopian world gives life to Puncher's argument. Similarly, Mary Gordon's "Ugly" is a long, excellent narrative about a refined Human Resources employee who winds up in a remote part of the country managing and socializing with individuals she would most likely have rejected in her day to day life back home. The two authors present the argument that family and social life in contemporary America is no longer ideal. Eric Puchner is able to support his argument by using a narrative that tells the story of a dystopian world where children rule and adults are hunted. Since the family structure is not working and the grown-ups are not adequately filling their places, individuals with the skill choose to make a world with no adults. The story begins with a boy preparing breakfast for his sister and himself when he sees a grown man plucking and eating apples from a nearby tree.
