According to Masters (2017), quality refers to the extent to which the health services offered to people increase their chances of attaining their desired health outcomes, and it is in line with the available knowledge in the profession. Quality is something which improves as time goes due to an increase in professional knowledge. Patient safety is about shielding patients from harm. According to WHO, patient safety is the lack of preventable harm to the patient during the treatment process and the reduction of errors associated with patient care up to an acceptable level. Safety is about reducing the number of risks which can occur during the treatment of patients, while quality involves giving the patient the best treatment experience. Safety and quality are not separable in that they work together to achieve a common good, and that is the overall wellbeing of the patient. There are several ways of ensuring that patients get quality and safe care. IOM designed a performance expectation which ensures that patients are getting care, which is safe, timely, efficient, effective, equitable and patient-centered (Michellotti et al., 2014).
