The movie is based on the It Had to Be Murder short story, which was written by Cornell Woolrich in 1942. The movie stars include; James Stewart (L.B. “Jeff” Jefferies), Grace Kelly (Lisa Carol Fremont), and Wendell Corey (NYPD Lt. Thomas J. Doyle). The movie begins with Jeff (Stewart), an adventuresome news photographer, being confined to a wheelchair in his villa apartment located in Greenwich Village. The area is experiencing heat waves; thus, people cannot close their windows. Accordingly, they keep their windows open, which allows Jeff to watch his neighbors. For this reason, Jeff spends most of his time on the apartment’s rear window observing his neighbors who are not aware that they are being watched.
