Running head: MISSISSIPPI BLACK CODES Mississippi Black Codes Institution Affiliation Date 1 2 MISSISSIPPI BLACK CODES Objectives of the Mississippi Black Codes Mississippi Black Codes passed in 1865 were to form a racial hierarchy to restrict and regulate blacks' freedom. The codes include the apprentice law which subjected minors to forced apprenticeships, civil rights law, penal law, and vagrant law (History is a Weapon, n.d.). The central objective of the codes was to restrict and regulate the freedom of blacks. The codes were also designed to maintain segregation between the whites and blacks through which courts they can approach. The other objective was to maintain white supremacy over the blacks (Black Codes). This means that blacks' movements, activities, or freedom still depended on the white people. The other objective was to continue the supply of cheap labor from the blacks. The law of signing labor contracts and any black that defaults are eligible for punishment and being given out to white landowners.
