The terms benign and hyperplasia refer to the absence of cancer such that benign is a medical term for not cancer, while hyperplasia refers to abnormal cell growth. BPH results in an enlarged prostate but is neither linked to cancer, and neither does it raise the patient’s chances of contracting prostate cancer (Kramer et al., 2007). The patients suffering from BPH have a high risk of being diagnosed with urinary tract infections because of the weakened bladder and urine backflow. The urine backflow is caused by the enlarged prostate, which presses against the patient’s urethra and bladder slowing down or entirely blocking the flow of urine. After surgery, the Prostatic Specific Antigen (PSA) levels are supposed to fall to below 4ng/mL and months after the surgery; they are expected to fall significantly low to undetectable levels. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia cannot be treated, and the methods of intervention: drugs and surgery are meant to relieve the symptoms.
