Types of conflicts Student’s name University affiliation Introduction A conflict can be defined as a situation where two or more individuals or groups are involved in a series of disputes whereby , each individual or group tries to gain acceptance of their own views. They can be classified into different types depending on their nature; Realistic conflicts According to Coser (1956) these are conflicts that are interpersonal .They are as a result of frustration over goals and obstacles that hinders one from obtaining the desired goals. They are positive in such a way that they can push people to organize their efforts and make change in their current situations. Substantive conflict • This a conflict that is based on the substance of the duty that is being performed by the group. They arises when there are disputes in group goals , ideas and values. They can be solved when the group members decides to directly address and solve their different ideas. They can focus on their goals as a group rather than as individual goals (Guetzkow & Gyr , 1954). Cognitive conflicts According to Cosier and Rose (1987) these are conflicts that arises when there are discrepancies over the interpretations that are to be reached and whose issues are important. It involves a discrepancy between various cognitive structures which may be; knowledge , values , attitudes , values and motives. If resolved it can lead to increased learning and understanding.
