In this article, the authors explain that change in culture is the significant characteristic of migrations and that it contributes considerably to the increasingly important rate of mental illnesses in the migrant groups of the United Kingdom (Bhugra & Becker, 2005). Migration is a process which takes place in three different steps which are premigration, migration, and post-migration. The pre-migration stage consists of taking the decision to leave and conducting and involves lower rates of mental illness. The step of migration is characterized by the physical movement itself. Post-migration, the latest stage of the migration process, is the one involving higher risks of mental illness (Bhugra & Becker, 2005). Cultural identity is the set of religious, social, historical, and linguistic principles through which an individual makes his/her decisions and interacts with others.
