This is especially because various medical conditions may exhibit common symptoms of psychological disorders and hence mimic them. An example of such medical conditions is hypothyroidism which may cause fatigue, diminished concentration, low mood, and irritability (Paris, 2015). These are symptoms which are common for major depressive disorder as well (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Therefore, it is possible to misdiagnose a person with hypothyroidism for depression. Another example of misdiagnosis involves undiagnosed diabetes. Some of the effects of the onset of type 2 diabetes are unexplained weight loss, feeling fatigued, and diabetes distress which may make one irritable (Paris, 2015). These symptoms are also not uncommon in depression diagnoses. As such, these examples show that it is possible to misdiagnose hypothyroidism and diabetes for depression, among other medical conditions that mimic psychological disorders. There are several other medical conditions which mimic psychological disorders. Another medical condition which may mimic psychological disorders is chronic fatigue syndrome.
