Introduction Films have proven to be important cultural, social and political artefacts. They have been used for political, social and economic propaganda, and they have been used to challenge a people’s norms (Amendola et al. 1). Indeed, films have proven to be effective tools for setting agenda and provoking new directions of conversation, and gender (masculinity, femininity, and queerness) has been an important theme in films. In this regard, films either challenge or perpetuate stereotypes (Winkler 78). Atomic Blonde (starring Charlize Theron as Lorraine Broughton) has been celebrated for breaking the norms of – most especially – femininity, but in significant ways it still clings to the view of the woman through the lens of patriarchy. While her battered body does shift attention from her being a woman to being a spy (i.e. her occupation), the scenes in which one sees her wounds cannot be viewed in isolation from the everything else that unfolds, even Lorraine’s language, and ultimately that “new” feminine image is not sustained for long.
