Running head: HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY 1 Human Physiology Name: Institution: Course: Date: HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY 2 1 • A neuron is a primary cell type of the nervous system that functions as a communication and integration agent. A neuron has three physical parts or features that aid in its roles of communication and integration, and they include; the cell body, axon, and the dendrites. The cell body also known as the soma contains the cell’s nucleus, and it is responsible for receiving information. The axon is single and long like a wire which acts as the output of information from soma to other parts of the cell. Dendrites, on the other hand, are thin and act as the neuron input; carrying information from other neurons to the cell body (Cherry, 2019). • A neuron’s primary function is communicating information in both electrical and chemical forms which helps to coordinate all the essential functions of life. This function relates to the parts of the cell such as the nucleus which contains DNA that sends out messages to other cells to grow, die, or divide. The plasma membrane of the cell also acts as cell communicators (Cherry, 2019). • Glial cells are type of cells that surround the neurons and support and protect them while at the same time modifying the Neurons’ actions. They differ with neurons in their functions; in that while neurons function as communication and integration agents, glial cells only support this function. Also, glial cells are large in number ...
