The company is based in Chicago and was formed by Boeing Airplane Company, Pratt and Whitney as United Aircraft and Transportation Corporation. However, in 1931, the developers established an operating division and transformed the name of the company to United Air Lines. The company was mainly formed to transport mail to various cities through the air. The company played a very significant role during the second world war since it trained the ground crew, modified airplanes for use as bombers and also, it transported mail, materials, and passengers in support of the war effort. United airlines are ranked as the fourth largest U.S carrier based on Revenue Passenger Mile. In March 2010. The company market share was 10.4%. The company earns its revenue mainly from its four segments, that is, the mainline, regional affiliate, cargo, and other sectors that involve obtaining from Mileage Plus. However, the company mostly uses the first four segment for the reporting purposes. Generally, the airline industry is cyclical since its highly depends on the economy and seasonality.
