The true Roman Empire fell in 476BCE. But eventually what happened to the eastern Roman Empire? It lived on and became a new power, called the Byzantine Empire, the modern day Turkey. Rise When Rome was dividing in the 3rd and 4th centuries, emperor Constantine was the man who united them. He converted the empire to Christianity making it the official religion and also formally moved the capital from Rome to the Greek city Byzantium which is the modern-day Turkey. Compared to the western half, the eastern empire had a larger urban population. This made it easier to maintain a better base in the military and enhanced economical activities in the region. Later, the emperor renamed the new capital Constantinople to honour his name.
