In typical situations, the testes should have descended into the scrotum before birth. Testosterone produced by the testes and a peptide resembling insulin control the descent of the testes. Several other factors, such as the parental genes, the environment, and parental lifestyle, increase the risk of this condition's occurrence. Other minor causes include the absence of testes and a reflex called spina bifida. Cryptorchidism often appears in prematurely born baby boys.
