With 26.7% of the total population obese, Mississippi has the highest
obesity rate in the United States (james, 2010). Mississippi’s state legislature has
funded several different programs to try to fix this drastic statistic, but their
solutions are not working. One way to help lower this statistic is to start with
children. School plays a major part in a child’s life. Schools could take the
initiative by allowing them certain foods at school and providing different types of
physical and health education classes.
Schools can take the first step by not permitting unhealthy foods to be
served. Something as simple limiting the non-nutritious foods that the schools are
serving can help reduce this high percentage rate. A boundary should be set on
the amount of milk served in lunch and snack (Bennett, 2011). Although milk is
known to be good for the body, too much milk can be steer ones child to being
obese. Unhealthy foods make children border line of obese.
Some schools have vending machines in the halls which contain junk food
and soda. This is a contributing factor to the growing rate. These vending
machines should provide snacks that are low in calories. Drinks should be
replaced with water, tea, and juices.
