Henry released in 1901. The short story tells of the story of Jim and Della who live together on meager earnings and the sacrifices they make for each other despite their socio-economic condition. Della shaves and sells her hair to a hair stylist on the eve of Christmas so as to buy a platinum chain gift for Jim. Jim sells his inherited watch to buy a set of hair combs for his wife who has already shaved her hair. Despite the gifts being meaningless the couple's love is enhanced. This short story is relevant today as it was back then as it emphasizes the theme of love and sacrifice as a path to true happiness. The short story illustrates that we should celebrate love since the love sentiment in a gift far outweighs material wealth or physical appearance. Theme The predominant theme in this story is that of love over material wealth. This theme is depicted in the manner in which the two couples perceive each other and strive to appease each other.
