This post provides the similarities and differences in the Deming cycle (PDCA) and
DMAIC from Six Sigma. DMAIC involve five steps and tollgates between its phases, while the
Deming cycle comprises four steps. Another main difference is that DMAIC and PDCA the
required corporate infrastructure (Shumla.com, 2020). DMAIC and Six Sigma methodology
processes require tollgates, steering committee, project sensor and a champion. Additionally,
PDCA lean frame framework has no fanfare or much hoopla that means PDCA involves
everybody. Still, Six Sigma needs to be trained and specialized people who usually are referred
to as green belts, master black belts or black belts. PDCA and DMAIC are very similar, apart
from the Six Sigma organization structure.
The strengths of PDCA are that it can be helpful and valuable in all institutions and
requires little instruction. On the weakness, it has an unspecific definition that leads to incorrect
usage (Shumla.com, 2020). Six Sigma applications provide proven success, error prevention,
profit enhancements and improved customer’s satisfaction. On the other hand, it expensive,
complicated, prevents innovation and requires total participation.
A good application of the above-discussed approaches is in Amazon. Amazon
incorporates elements of Six Sigma in its overall operation plan. Amazon relates and integrates
the six Sigma and lean manufacturing principles in its excellence operation programs. For
example, it has adopted several Six Sigma and PDCA concepts, including deliberate effort in
recruiting excellent thought leaders through exclusive selection in schools like Carnegie-Mellon
and MIT (SIX SIGMA DAILY, 2021). Furthermore, the Amazon lean approach complements
the Six Sigma perspective, which focuses on its streaming operation in daily practices. This
