Briefly, superstition is some credulous belief, which is in excess and has reverence for
supernatural happenings. It is also a widely held belief, though irrational and has influence,
mostly leading to bad luck. In this case, it is uttered that a pregnant woman who is frightened by
bats is likely to have her baby marked. Hailing from logical reasoning, the premise here is a
deductive one whereby Mary is already pregnant and has experienced frightening by a bat; thus,
the baby shall be marked in the end. Here, we conclude that being pregnant and bat frightening
you leads to marking the baby, which is the case for Mary.
Unfortunately, we cannot conclude that marking and being pregnant go hand in hand since
the statement is incomplete. Conversely, there needs to be complete information by handing out
examples of such occurrences of pregnancy and marking of the baby after frightening by bats.
This seems to be a belief held by some section of the society, hence no concrete reason behind
assumptions of it being valid. There exist many beliefs as such inclusive of the below-
mentioned:
When you scratch your palm, you will get money within the day.
Crossing a mouse in the morning will bring about bad luck.
Crossing over someone sitting will bring about bad luck to your children.
In the beliefs mentioned above, there is no evidence of logical reasoning. Empirical evidence
is missing in the beliefs mentioned above. The information is not obtained through any
documentation or observations of specific behaviors and patterns or even through experiments.
Beliefs are mostly hearsay with no support in their ever existence or happenings.
