NON-TRADITIONAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
2
Non-traditional learning, also called E-learning or Distance Learning, is mainly
characterized by asynchronous communication. Asynchronous communication refers to the
learners and electronic networking that facilitates exchange of information among learners and
between learners and instructors (Meyers, Bennett & Lysaght, 2004). This networking is
supported by online resources such as emails, online conferencing, wikis, collaborative systems,
and blogs. In addition there are course management systems that are designed to facilitate
asynchronous communication; they include moodle, Sakai and WebCT. Nontraditional
environment has proved to be effective for adult learners who have commitments like family and
work.
The nature of asynchronous communication has greatly impacted the instructional design
nontraditional learning in that the learning process becomes more interactive as compared to the
traditional method; one of the advantages is that the students can ask for assistance without fear
of stigmatization by fellow students. Secondly, learners are independent and do not entirely rely
on teachers to give all the information as is the case with traditional learning; this means that the
students work hard to ensure that they do further learning to facilitate their understanding of
concepts. As such, instructors do not have full control in non-traditional learning since they do
not have autonomy to change the instructional activities and methods once they have been
implemented (Vasser, 2010).
