Introduction The purpose of this experiment is to examine the interference and diffraction of visible laser light as it passes through narrow single and double slits. Some of the parameters that will be investigated include; • How the width of a slit and the wavelength of the light passing through it determine the diffraction of light. • Determination of the wavelength of laser light from the diffraction pattern produced when it passes through a single slit as well as through a pair of slits. • Measurement of the width of a narrow slit from the diffraction pattern produced when the laser light passes through it. • The role played by single slit diffraction in the variation in the intensity of a double slit interference pattern. Also, the distances between the central maximum and the diffraction minima for a single slit will be measured by scanning the laser pattern with a light sensor and plotting light intensity versus distance. Also, the distance between interference maxima for two or more slits will be measured. These measurements will then be compared to theoretical values. Finally, differences and similarities between interference and diffraction patterns will be examined, including the effect of changing the wavelength of the light. 2.
