After reading numerous poems, my poem of choice would have to be Man from
Nantucket. It was hands down one of the best poems I have ever read. This poem caught my
attention in various ways. It spoke to me on many different levels.
After I read Man from Nantucket, I was left wondering. The poem itself was a pun.
According Shravan, pun is the use of words that are alike or nearly alike in sound but different in
meaning; a play on words . The title of the poem had different meaning, as well. I love reading
poems and stories that have variety when it comes to the themes and certain parts of the story.
Although this poem was rather short, the author got his point across with the poem being
simple and brief. My mother always told me, “Sometimes less is more”. This means the five
lines in Man from Nantucket is just as entertaining and attention-grabbing as a longer poem. This
is a quality that I enjoy in a poem. It is straight to the point, but not too undemanding.
Man from Nantucket comes from types of poems called limerick poems. Limerick poems
started off as games in Irish county and the town of limerick. The partakers of this game would
take turns creating lines and stanzas. The next person would follow by giving a rhyme scheme.
They originally were nursery rhymes, but progressed into more over the years. Man form
Nantucket was one of the few, original poems that are exist to this day.
This poem is in the form of AABBA rhyme scheme. A rhyme scheme is the pattern of
rhythm in a poem . This basically means line one, two, and five rhyme. The third and fourth line
rhyme with one another, but they do not rhyme with the first two lines and last line. This rhyme
scheme is much more modest.
