RUNNING HEAD: JAPAN Student Name Date School affiliation RUNNING HEAD: JAPAN Japan's rise after the Second World War After their defeat and eventual surrender in 1945, Japan was faced with the task of rebuilding the nation after the war. The Second World War had brought over 1.8 million deaths and effectively wiped out 4% of the Japanese working population. Material national wealth had dropped by 25% as compared to pre-war levels while consumer production dropped by 92% during the same period.(Tabb, 1995). Political growth A turnaround was kick-started with the help of Allied forces under the command of General Douglas MacArthur. After the war, the Allied forces had decided to divide the Japanese empire among themselves just as they had done in Germany after world war one. General MacArthur led a spirited effort to change the Japanese constitution to a parliamentary system with the Emperor playing only a ceremonial role in government. After much debate over several years, the Japanese adopted a draft constitution that proposed a bicameral legislature and took into consideration Japan's conservative 1889 constitution popularly known as the right Meiji constitution.
